Starting his career in professional boxing at the young age of 22, Joppy's debut was against Dwayne Tennet on February 26, 1993. He won via 4 round unanimous decision, beginning his career with a bang, with 18 consecutive wins, 15 of which were stoppage wins. His first world title fight came when he was 25, after 22 professional fights, against Shinji Takehara for the middleweight WBA title. He defeated Takehara via 9th round TKO to become the middleweight champion of the world.
