Wladimir Klitschko is known to be one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time. Born on March 25, 1976, Klitschko fought in the heavyweight division and had a professional boxing career that spanned more than 20 years, from 1996 to 2017. With a record of 64-5, Klitschko held five world heavyweight titles and was the unified WBA (super), IBF, WBO, IBO, and Ring magazine champion. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame Class of 2021, and his fights regularly drew a global television audience of 300–500 million viewers.
Klitschko started his professional boxing career in November 1996, when he made his debut against Fabian Meza. His 24-fight win streak was ended by Ross Puritty, who beat him via 11th round TKO in 1998, and Klitschko was stopped four times across his career. However, he went on to win the world heavyweight championship by beating Chris Byrd in 2000, becoming the WBO heavyweight world champion.
Over the course of his professional boxing career, Klitschko amassed a record of 64-5, with 53 knockout wins and four losses via knockout, and five title wins, which made him one of the most dominant heavyweight boxers of all time. His reign as world heavyweight champion saw him break several records, including the longest cumulative heavyweight title reign of all time, with 4,382 days as world heavyweight champion, and most fighters beaten for the world heavyweight championship, at 23. He also holds records for the most wins and title defenses of the unified championship in professional boxing history.
Klitschko's boxing style was strategic and intelligent, and he was known for his exceptional knockout power, using a strong jab, straight right hand and left hook, quick hand speed, as well as great footwork and mobility, unusual for boxers of his size. His trainer, Emanuel Steward, was credited with Klitschko's transition from an aggressive puncher to a more defensively-oriented boxer, much as he had done with Lennox Lewis from 1995 to 2003.
Klitschko's career highlights included his wins over David Haye, Jean-Marc Mormeck, Lamon Brewster, Alexander Povetkin, Mariusz Wach, Chris Byrd, and Bryant Jennings. His 11 most notable fights saw him take on opponents from all corners of the world, and each of them was a testament to his exceptional skills and dominance in the ring.
One of Klitschko's most famous fights was his first world title fight against Chris Byrd in 2000. Klitschko won the fight via 12 round unanimous decision, becoming the WBO Heavyweight World Champion.
In 2006, Klitschko regained a portion of the world heavyweight championship after defeating Byrd in a rematch to win the IBF and IBO titles. He won his second WBO title by defeating Sultan Ibragimov in 2008. Following his defeat of Ruslan Chagaev in 2009, Klitschko was awarded the Ring title, and lastly, he won the WBA title from David Haye in 2011. In September 2015, Klitschko was ranked as the world's best active boxer, pound for pound, by BoxRec; he reached a career peak of second best on The Ring's pound-for-pound list in November 2014. After defeating Alexander Povetkin in October 2013 and until his loss to Tyson Fury in November 2015, Klitschko was recognized as the lineal champion by the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board.
In his final fight on April 29, 2017, Klitschko faced British boxer Anthony Joshua for Joshua's heavyweight IBF title. The fight went down as one of the most exciting in boxing history, with both fighters trading knockdowns. Klitschko eventually lost the fight via 11th round TKO, and it marked the end of his professional boxing career.
In conclusion, Wladimir Klitschko was one of the best boxers of his time, and his impressive record speaks for itself. He was known for his exceptional skills, including his knockout power, strategic and intelligent boxing style, and great footwork and mobility. He held several world titles and broke several records during his reign as world heavyweight champion. Klitschko's legacy in boxing will be remembered for years to come, and his induction to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2021 was a fitting tribute to his incredible career.
