Ross Puritty was born on December 18, 1966, in Phoenix, Arizona, and is best remembered for his shocking upset of Wladimir Klitschko in 1998 that won him the WBC international heavyweight title, as well as for his notable victories over former world title challengers Jorge Luis Gonzalez and Joe Hipp.
Puritty's professional boxing career spanned more than 18 years, from 1989 to 2007. He made his professional boxing debut against Sergio Araujo at the age of 22 on May 29, 1989, defeating Araujo via 1st round KO.
Puritty had a total of 54 fights in his professional boxing career, with 31 wins, 20 losses, and 3 draws. He had 26 knockout wins and lost 3 times via knockout. Puritty fought in the heavyweight weight class, and his height was 6 ft 3 inches (1.91m). He had an orthodox stance and was nicknamed "The Boss" and "RA."
Despite losing 20 fights in his career, Puritty never lost a title fight. He had no total title wins and did not defend any titles. He never won a title-fight KO.
One of Puritty's best fights and notable victories was his win over Hall of Famer Wladimir Klitschko. On December 5, 1998, in Kiev, Ukraine, Puritty defeated Klitschko in a shocking upset, claiming the WBC international heavyweight title. Despite being the underdog in the fight, Puritty's experience and determination helped him win this bout.
Another significant win for Puritty was against Jorge Luis Gonzalez, a Cuban boxer and former world title challenger. On October 27, 1995, in Mashantucket, Connecticut, Puritty won a 10-round unanimous decision against Gonzalez, proving his boxing skills in the ring.
Puritty had 20 losses in his professional boxing career, all of them in non-title bouts. He suffered his first loss against Cleveland Woods via 1st round TKO on June 27, 1989. He has been stopped three times and lost 17 times via decision.
While Puritty fought many top-level boxers during his career, he never fought in a world championship fight. However, he did fight former World Boxing Organization's world heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison, and the result was a draw.
Puritty's last professional fight was a non-title bout against Carl Gathright on October 27, 2007. He won the fight via 8-round majority decision. Since then, he has retired from boxing with a record of 31-20-3, including 26 knockout wins and three losses via knockout.
Ross Puritty's boxing career may have been somewhat obscured by his losses, but he remains a respected and accomplished boxer who achieved significant wins during his 18-year career.
