Benny Paret was a professional boxer whose career spanned more than seven years, from 1954 to 1962. He had a total of 50 fights, with 35 wins, 12 losses, three draws, and no no-contests. Out of his 35 wins, 11 were via knockout. He won six world titles at welterweight and defended one of them. Nevertheless, he never won a championship fight via knockout. On the other hand, he lost four fights via knockout.
Paret started his professional career with a win against Oscar Campos, whom he defeated via a six-round points victory at age 17. He went on to win 12 consecutive fights, six of which he won via stoppage. His first world title fight was against Don Jordan at age 23, which he won via a 15-round unanimous decision to become the welterweight champion of the world.
Throughout his career, Paret fought some notable opponents, including some Hall-of-Famers like Emile Griffith. Some of his memorable victories include wins over Luis Federico Thompson, Garnet Hart, Don Jordan, and Victor Zalazar.
Unfortunately, Paret's career was also marred with losses. He suffered a total of 12 losses in his professional career, with three of them being title fights and the other nine being non-title bouts. He was stopped four times and lost eight times via decision. His first and only stoppage in a title fight was against Emile Griffith, who knocked him out in the twelfth round to win Paret's NBA, NYSAC, and The Ring welterweight titles.
Paret's career highlights include winning his first world titles against Don Jordan via a 15-round unanimous decision on May 27, 1960. He became the NBA, NYSAC, and The Ring welterweight champion. He defended his titles against Griffith in September 1961 via a 15-round split decision victory.
However, Paret's last fight would go down in history as one of the most tragic moments in boxing history. He defended his NBA, NYSAC, and The Ring welterweight titles against Emile Griffith on March 24, 1962. In the twelfth round of the fight, Griffith delivered a series of punches to Paret's head, who then fell unconscious. Paret would never regain consciousness and died ten days later due to brain injuries sustained in the fight.
Benny Paret's career was one of highs and lows. He was a skilled and talented boxer who had the ability to win fights. He won six world titles, defending one of them. He fought some of the best boxers of his time, earning some memorable victories. However, his tragic death in the ring is a reminder of the dangers of the sport and the need to ensure fighter safety.
