Buddy McGirt was a professional boxer with a 73-6-1 record, including 48 knockout wins and two losses via knockout, and two title wins. His career spanned more than 14 years — from 1982 to 1997. He made his professional boxing debut against Lamont Haithcoach at the age of 18 on March 2, 1982, and went on to win 28 consecutive fights after a draw in his debut, which included 25 wins via stoppage.
McGirt had his first world title fight at the age of 24 on February 14, 1988, after 38 professional fights, against Frankie Warren for the super-lightweight IBF (vacant) title. He defeated Warren via 12th round TKO to become the super-lightweight champion of the world. This was a significant victory for McGirt, and it set the stage for even greater success.
McGirt won two world titles at two weight classes, which is an impressive feat in the sport of boxing. His second world title win was on November 29, 1991, when he defeated Simon Brown for the WBC welterweight title. He won by beating Brown via 12 round unanimous decision, and it was another great victory for him.
McGirt put on some great performances during his professional career, but these three fights stand out as the highlight of his career. In February 1988, he won his first world title by defeating Frankie Warren via 12th round TKO. He became the IBF super-lightweight world champion. In July 1988, he successfully defended the IBF super-lightweight title against Howard Davis Jr. by winning the fight via 1st round KO. And finally, in November 1991, he won the WBC welterweight title from Simon Brown, beating him via 12 round unanimous decision.
Throughout his career, McGirt's record was impressive. He had a total of six losses in his professional boxing career — three of them in title bouts and three in non-title bouts. He suffered his first loss against Frankie Warren via 10 round unanimous decision on July 20, 1986, which ended his 28-fight win streak. He has been stopped two times and lost four times via decision.
After his long and successful career, McGirt retired from professional boxing with an outstanding record. McGirt was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) in 2019 in recognition of his contribution to the sport.
