DeMarcus Corley, a former super-lightweight champion, made his professional boxing debut on May 17, 1996, defeating his opponent Aaron Smith via first-round TKO. He remained undefeated in his first 16 fights before losing to Daniel Lujan via split decision, putting an end to his 17-fight winning streak.
Corley's career spanned over 22 years, during which he fought 85 bouts, winning 51, with 28 of these victories coming by way of knockout. He lost 33 times, eight of which were knockout losses, and had one draw with no no-contests. Among his many achievements are one world title win and two successful title defenses.
It was on June 30, 2001, that Corley fought Felix Flores for the WBO super-lightweight vacant title. The battle ended in the first round with a TKO victory for Corley, who became the super-lightweight champion of the world. Flores was no match for Corley's offensive style, and the boxing world sat up and took notice of the champion's potential.
Corley's career highlight, however, came on January 4, 2003, when he successfully defended his world title against Randall Bailey. The fight became a classic, with both fighters going toe-to-toe and exchanging blows throughout the entire bout. It was a close match, but Corley emerged as the winner, victorious via a 12-round unanimous decision.
Throughout his career, Corley has had his fair share of losses, including three of them in title bouts and the other 30 losses coming in non-title bouts. He was stopped eight times and lost 25 times via decision. His last professional fight was a non-title bout against Custio Clayton on March 29, 2019, which he lost via a 6th round TKO.
Corley's success as a fighter was largely due to the sheer power of his punches. He had 28 knockout victories, and in his first 16 fights, he won eight times by way of knockout. Corley's punching power made him a feared opponent, and many of his rivals found it difficult to withstand the brute force of his blows.
Despite his boxing achievements, Corley is not a household name, and his accomplishments are often overlooked. However, he remains an inspiration to many young fighters who aspire to become boxing champions. His dedication, hard work, and perseverance during his long and illustrious career are a testament to his character.
Perhaps one of the reasons why Corley's name is not as renowned as other boxing greats is the fact that he has not achieved the level of notoriety that many other fighters have attained. Corley kept a low profile, letting his boxing do the talking. He never sought fame or glory, but rather focused on delivering his best in every fight.
Corley's story is one of a fighter who dedicated his life to his craft, striving for excellence every day. He fought with passion, commitment, and discipline, achieving success and recognition along the way. It's no wonder that he is remembered by many as a boxing legend and an inspiration to others who aspire to follow in his footsteps.
