On January 7, 2006, after Cory Spinks was elevated to "Undisputed Champion" status before he had lost his titles to Zab Judah, the WBA's welterweight title was vacated. With Judah's loss, Collazo was then recognized as the WBA's sole welterweight champion. On May 13, 2006, he lost the title to Ricky Hatton in a very tight and controversial affair, which went the distance.

In his professional boxing career, Collazo fought Amir Khan in 2014. Khan dominated all rounds and scored three knockdowns during the fight. He also fought Andre Berto for the WBC Welterweight in 2009. Collazo lost a very close fight and a controversial unanimous decision after 12 rounds. Collazo appeared to be ahead most of the fight.

Collazo's last professional fight was a non-title bout against Uzbek boxer Kudratillo Abdukakhorov on October 18, 2019. Collazo lost the fight via 10 round technical-decision.

In summary, Luis Collazo's professional boxing career spanned more than 19 years. Collazo won one world title at welterweight, with one successful title defense.
