Elvin Ayala, also known as "The Lycan," is a former American professional boxer who competed in the middleweight division. With a total of 43 professional fights, Ayala had an impressive record of 29-13-1, including 13 victories by knockout. Despite never winning a world title, Ayala had a long and successful career that spanned over 15 years from 2003 to 2019.
Ayala was born on January 15, 1981, in Reading, Pennsylvania, and made his professional debut at the age of 22. He faced Michael Gutrick on September 19, 2003, in Toms River, New Jersey, and won the fight via a four-round unanimous decision. This marked the beginning of a successful career that saw Ayala win his first 16 fights.
At the peak of his career, Ayala faced off against some of the top contenders in his weight division. One of his most notable fights came against future The Contender reality television participant, David Banks. On November 24, 2006, Ayala lost a close 10 round split decision to Banks, suffering his first professional defeat. Ayala faced Banks again in February 2007 but suffered another loss, this time by unanimous decision.
Ayala bounced back from his losses to Banks, winning back-to-back fights against Dillon Carew and Jose Angel Roman. However, his biggest challenge came in March 2008, when he faced undefeated International Boxing Federation (IBF) middleweight world champion, Arthur Abraham. Abraham proved to be too much for Ayala, sending him to the canvas in the fifth round before finishing him in the 12th round via knockout.
Ayala continued to fight against some of the toughest opponents in the middleweight division, including a controversial draw against then-unbeaten The Contender Season 1 champion, Sergio Mora. Despite the draw, Ayala's record had dropped to 18-2-1 after the fight. Ayala then took on Lajuan Simon for the United States Boxing Association (USBA) middleweight title but lost by unanimous decision.
In June 2010, Ayala faced off against David Lemieux, who entered the bout at 22–0 with 21 knockouts, on ESPN's Friday Night Fights for the WBC International middleweight title. Unfortunately for Ayala, he hit the canvas three times in the opening round and lost the fight by technical knockout at the 2:44 mark. Ayala attributed his loss to being too heavy and having to lose weight rapidly, which left him drained.
Despite suffering several losses throughout his career, Ayala remained a respected contender in the middleweight division. In November 2016, he defeated Marcos Reyes by a seventh-round technical knockout, marking his first stoppage win in over four years. Ayala retired from professional boxing in 2019 with a record of 29-13-1, which included wins over notable fighters such as Ronald Gavril, Marcos Reyes, Dillon Carew, and Eric Mitchell.
Throughout his career, Ayala had a reputation as a hard-hitting fighter with a solid technical skill set. Standing at 5'11" with a reach of 74", Ayala fought in the orthodox stance and competed in the middleweight division. Despite never winning a world title, Ayala's impressive record and reputation as a tough opponent make him a memorable figure in the world of boxing.
After retiring from the sport, Ayala has remained active in the boxing community, often offering his insights and analysis on various boxing events. He remains a respected member of the boxing fraternity, and his sheer presence serves as a source of inspiration for aspiring boxers worldwide.
