Ouma was born on December 12, 1978, in Kampala, Uganda. He began his professional boxing career at the age of 19 when he defeated Napoleon Middlebrooks via 1st round TKO on July 10, 1998. In his first nine fights, he won eight by stoppage.
On October 2, 2004, Ouma had his first world title fight against Verno Phillips for the IBF super-welterweight title. He won the fight via 12 round unanimous decision, becoming the super-welterweight champion of the world.
In total, Ouma won 18 fights via knockout and suffered two losses via KO. He won the world title once, and made one successful title defense.

The southpaw retired from professional boxing in 2017 with a record of 29-11-1, which included one world title win.
Throughout his career, Ouma showed strength and perseverance both inside and outside of the ring.
Before his professional career, Ouma was on the Ugandan national amateur team and decided to stay in the United States to pursue a career to support his family in Uganda.
Ouma's father was allegedly beaten to death by the Ugandan army as retaliation for Kassim leaving the country.
While in Florida in 2002, Ouma was shot twice but overcame the near-death experience to continue his boxing career.
Ouma's life and career inspired the 2008 documentary "Kassim the Dream," which was an official selection at several film festivals.
Ouma made his return to the ring in 2016 in a winning fight against Adam Katumwa via 6th round TKO. However, he lost his next six fights, the last being a loss against Fedor Michel via unanimous decision on May 25th, 2022.
Although Ouma's career had ups and downs, his record and notable fights show that he was a skilled boxer who fought valiantly throughout his 19-year career. His life and career prove that hard work, determination, and perseverance can lead to success, even in the face of adversity.
