Matthew Macklin is a retired British-Irish professional boxer who competed from 2001 to 2016. Born on May 14, 1982, in Birmingham, West Midlands, England, Macklin started his professional boxing career at a young age of 19 on November 17, 2001, defeating Ram Singh via 1st round TKO. Throughout his career, Macklin had a total of 41 fights, out of which he won 35 and lost 6, with no draws or no-contests. He had a knockout percentage of 53.66%, with 22 knockout wins.
Macklin competed in two weight classes throughout his career, middleweight, and light-middleweight. His height was 5 ft 10 in (178 cm), with a reach of 71 in (180 cm). He fought in Orthodox stance and was also known by his three nicknames, "Mack the Knife," "Tipperary Tornado," and "The Roscommon Rock."
Macklin's professional career spanned more than 14 years, from 2001 to 2016. He had his first world title fight at the age of 29 on June 25, 2011, after 30 professional fights, against Felix Sturm for the WBA title, which he lost to via a 12 round split-decision. Macklin held multiple regional championships, including the Irish title from 2005 to 2006, the British title in 2009, and the European title from 2009 to 2011.
Throughout his career, Macklin had remarkable victories over several renowned fighters, including Joachim Alcine, Chris Herrmann, Sandor Micsko, Amin Asikainen, Brian Rose, Jason Welborn, and Lamar Russ. Some of his most notable fights include his wins over Asikainen, which earned him the European middleweight title via a brutal 1st-round knockout, and his fight against Alcine, where he knocked him out in the first round.
Macklin had a total of six losses in his professional boxing career, with three of them in title bouts and the other three in non-title bouts. He suffered his first loss against Andrew Facey via 10 round PTS on November 6, 2003. Out of these six defeats, four were losses via KO.
Matthew Macklin's last professional fight was a non-title bout against fellow British boxer Brian Rose on April 9, 2016, where he won via a 12 round majority decision. It's been more than five years since this fight, and Macklin has since retired from professional boxing with a record of 35-6, which included 22 knockout wins and four losses via knockout.
Since his retirement, Macklin has worked as a boxing manager ad commentator. He set up the Macklin's Gym Marbella gym in Marbella, Spain, with Daniel Kinahan, which was later rebranded as MTK - Mack the Knife after MGM Resorts International filed a trademark lawsuit over its use of the 'MGM' initials. MTK was bought out by external investors, with Matthew Macklin remaining on the board in an advisory capacity.
Macklin has also become a pundit for Sky Sports and continues to be involved in the boxing world. However, in April 2022, Macklin was prevented from boarding a flight to the United States at a London airport because of links to Daniel Kinahan. He was travelling to Las Vegas to cover a fight between Shakur Stevenson and Óscar Valdez.
Matthew Macklin is one of the most promising boxers in British-Irish boxing history, with a remarkable career spanning over 14 years. Though he retired from professional boxing in 2016, he continues to inspire young aspiring boxers and remain a significant influence in the boxing world through his work as a manager and a commentator.
