Reggie Johnson is a former boxer who had a remarkable career spanning over 23 years from 1984 to 2008. He fought a total of 52 times during his professional boxing career and won 44 fights, including 25 by knockout. Johnson also had one draw and suffered seven losses, all of them coming via decision.
Johnson's professional debut was on August 14, 1984, against Mark Henderson when he was only 17 years old, and he won the bout via 4 round PTS. After that, he won five more consecutive fights, including three via stoppage, building momentum early in his career.
Johnson had his first world title bout in 1991 against James Toney for the IBF Middleweight Title at the age of 24. Although he lost the title fight on a 12 round split-decision, Johnson put up an excellent performance against the much more experienced Toney.
The middleweight superstar then went on to win two world titles at two weight classes. He won the WBA Middleweight Title on April 22, 1992, from Steve Collins through a 12 round majority decision. Six years later, he won the IBF Light-Heavyweight Title on February 6, 1998, by knocking out William Guthrie in the fifth round of the bout.
Despite the successes, Johnson had his share of setbacks, losing seven times during his career - five of which were in title bouts. He suffered his first loss against Adam George in January 1985, via 8 round unanimous decision. However, it is impressive to note that Johnson has never been stopped via a knockout in his professional career, and all of his losses came through decision.
One of Johnson's most notable career highlights came on June 5, 1999, where he lost to Roy Jones Jr. via 12 round unanimous decision in a fight where he was fighting for both the WBA and WBC Light-Heavyweight titles.
Johnson, known for his excellent ring movement and footwork, was an extremely well-rounded fighter known for his tactical approach to fights. Fans of the boxer often praise his technical ability, crisp punching, and stamina, making him a difficult opponent for anyone.
One remarkable attribute of Johnson was his ability to win title fights and defend them. In his two title bouts, Johnson won both and went on to defend them five times, with two KO wins. These feats attest to both his effectiveness as a champion and his endurance over a range of opponents.
Reggie Johnson retired from professional boxing with a record of 44-7-1, two title wins, and 25 knockout wins. His last fight was a non-title match against Julio César González on February 23, 2008. Johnson won the fight via 12 round split-decision, bringing the curtains down on his career of over two decades.
In conclusion, Reggie Johnson's boxing career was one characterized by a strong resilience, ring intellect, and technical proficiency. These attributes enabled him to achieve outstanding results throughout his 23-year career, winning titles, defending them several times, and putting up excellent performances along the way.
