Lloyd Honeyghan is a Jamaican-born British former professional boxer. He was born on April 22, 1960, and began his professional boxing career at the age of 20. He had a total of 48 fights, 43 wins, 5 losses, and 0 draws. Out of his 43 wins, he managed to knock out his opponents 30 times. He held the WBC, The Ring magazine welterweight titles twice between 1986 and 1989, and was the undisputed welterweight champion from 1986 to 1987.
Honeyghan’s career spanned for over 14 years, between 1980 and 1995, under the tutelage of trainer Terry Lawless. He made his professional debut on December 8, 1980, against Mike Sullivan, where he won via 6 round PTS. After his debut, he went on to win 30 consecutive fights, which included 20 wins via stoppage.
Honeyghan had his first world title fight at the age of 26 on September 27, 1986, after 27 professional fights. He fought against Donald Curry for the welterweight WBA, WBC, IBF, and The Ring titles. Despite being considered the underdog, he defeated Curry via 6th round RTD to become the undisputed welterweight champion of the world. After this fight, he won a series of highly competitive bouts against notable boxers, including Johnny Bumphus, Gene Hatcher, and Yung-Kil Chung.
Honeyghan’s fighting style was highly aggressive and was admired by fans worldwide for his unconventional techniques. He had exceptional speed, movement, and a powerful punch that enabled him to knock out his opponents with ease. Despite Honeyghan’s early success in his career, he suffered his first loss against Jorge Vaca via 8 round technical-decision on October 28, 1987, which ended his 31-fight win streak. Honeyghan suffered his second loss against Gianfranco Rosi, losing his European welterweight title via a 12-round split decision in Italy.
Honeyghan retired from professional boxing with a record of 43-5, which included 30 knockout wins and four losses via knockout, and six title wins. His last professional fight was a non-title bout against Adrian Dodson on February 25, 1995. Honeyghan lost the fight via 3rd round TKO.
