Mario Martínez was a Mexican former professional boxer who is revered for his incredible career that spanned over 15 years from 1980 to 1995. Throughout his career, he fought a total of 62 matches, winning 51 times with 31 of the wins coming via KOs. He lost nine fights and drew twice, and he never received a single no-contest throughout his career.

Born on August 15th, 1965, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Martínez's professional career started at the age of 16 in his native region. He became known as "Azabache," and he had his first professional debut at the age of 14 when he faced Juan Ceja on February 22, 1980. Martínez would win the fight via a first-round knockout, starting his pro career on a high.

After his debut, Martínez would go on to win twelve more consecutive fights, including seven via stoppages. He faced Rosendo Alonso on June 6th, 1981, where he suffered his first loss via ten-round points decision, which ended his 14-fight unbeaten streak.

Some of Martínez's notable victories came against Rolando Navarrete, Darrell Savoy, Jorge Gomez, Jimmy Jackson, Angel Luis Garcia, Dana Roston, and Ramon Marchena Jr. However, his most remarkable performance came on June 23rd, 1984, when he defeated Navarrete via fifth-round TKO.

Martínez's first-ever world-title fight came on September 13th, 1984, when he faced Julio Cesar Chavez for the WBC (vacant) title. Unfortunately, Martínez ended up losing to Chavez via an 8th round TKO, but many pundits believe that the fight catapulted Chavez's career.

After his defeat to Chavez, Martinez went on an eight-match unbeaten run, including a loss to Roger Mayweather via a close split decision. In 1988, he faced Azumah Nelson for the vacant WBC World super featherweight title. Though Martinez scored a knockdown in the 10th round, Azumah won via an unpopular split decision. A year later, he lost in a rematch to Nelson via a 12th round TKO.

Martinez also lost to Jeff Fenech and Dingaan Thobela. His last professional fight was a non-title rematch against Andres Sandoval on July 29th, 1995. Mario Martínez won the fight via 12 round unanimous decision, and he retired from professional boxing with a record of 51-9-2, including 31 knockout wins and three losses via knockout.

Martínez will be remembered as a talented fighter who fought against some of the best fighters the world has ever seen. His boxing style combined excellent footwork, a strong jab, and well-timed hooks to keep his opponents on their toes.

Throughout his career, Martínez faced adversity, but he persevered, often reminding himself and his fans, "Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it's the courage to continue that counts." Even though he never won the world title or defended any belts, he was a fantastic fighter who gave it his all in every bout.

Today, many young boxers look to Martínez as a role model, and his impact on the boxing community is widely felt.
