He's known for his fierce and aggressive fighting style, which has led him to win 10 world titles across four weight classes.
Donaire's career took off on February 22, 2001, when he competed in his first professional boxing match against Jose Lazaro. Donaire defeated Lazaro with a first-round knockout. After 18 fights, he had his first world title bout on July 7, 2007.
At the age of 24, Donaire fought Vic Darchinyan for the flyweight IBF title, earning himself the flyweight championship title in the fifth round via TKO. Donaire went on to become a two-time unified world champion, with his first unified title victory occurring on February 19, 2011.
In this battle, he fought against Fernando Montiel, achieving a second round TKO and acquiring both the WBC and WBO bantamweight championship titles. Eight months later, Donaire defended both these titles against Omar Narvaez via unanimous decision in a 12-round fight.
On July 7, 2012, Donaire added another unified world championship to his resume. He fought against Jeffrey Mathebula, earning a unanimous 12-round decision victory and becoming the WBO and IBF super-bantamweight world champion means.
On October 13, 2012, he defeated Toshiaki Nishioka (JPN) on the ninth round via technical knockout, earning himself the title of the Ring Synonym World Super Bantamweight, while still retaining his WBO title.
In December 2012, Donaire defended both his titles for the second time, taking on Jorge Arce at the Toyota Center, Houston. The bout concluded in the third round as Donaire defeated Arce with a knockout, leaving the audience without doubt about his abilities as a boxer.
On May 31, 2014, Donaire won the undisputed WBA featherweight title by beating Simpiwe Vetyeka with a technical decision in five rounds.
Donaire took a break of a few years from the sport, returning on November 3, 2018, when he won the WBA (Super) Bantamweight title, beating Ryan Burnett through a fourth-round technical decision. He kept competing and went on to win the WBC bantamweight title in May 2021, defeating Nordine Oubaali with a fourth-round knockout.
He then defended this WBC title against Reymart Gaballo by knocking out his opponent in the fourth round. Sadly, his fight against Naoya Inoue in 2019 did not end in his favor with a unanimous decision.
After his WBC title defense against Gaballo, Donaire entered the ring on June 7, 2022, in a bantamweight unification bout against Naoya Inoue. The bout happened in Kasukabe, Saitama, Japan. Inoue dealt him a knockout blow in the second round, taking away Donaire's WBC title from him.
Throughout his career, Donaire has had a total of seven losses, with two being losses via knockout. One of his significant losses was against Rosendo Sanchez, his first-ever 5 round unanimous decision, on March 10, 2001. Losses against Jesse Magdaleno, Guillermo Rigondeaux, Carl Frampton, and Nicholas Walters round out his record.
Despite suffering from numerous losses, Donaire has never been short of thrilling victories. He has won numerous fights, including against some of the boxing world's most well-known figures. His record is proof of his significant achievements and the remarkable career he's had as a boxer.
