Phillip N'dou is a South African former professional boxer who was born on May 4, 1977. His boxing career spanned over 18 years, from 1997 to 2016.
He made his professional debut on September 11, 1997, and won the fight against Nigel Leake via 2nd round TKO. N'dou continued to achieve victory after victory, winning nine more consecutive fights, which included nine wins via stoppage.
N'dou fought his first world title match at the age of 26 on November 1, 2003. He was up against Floyd Mayweather Jr. for the WBC title. He lost the fight to Mayweather Jr. via 7th round TKO. Despite the defeat, this fight against Mayweather Jr. is considered the most notable highlight of his career.
N'dou boxed in various weight classes, including featherweight, super featherweight, lightweight, and welterweight. In total, he had 42 fights, out of which he won 37, lost 5, and had no draws or no-contests. He had an impressive knockout record, scoring 34 KO wins out of his 37 wins. Unfortunately, he also suffered three losses via knockout.
Some of N'dou's best fights and notable victories include wins over Ramadhani Shauri, Rachid Drilzane, Bhekimpilo Mlilo, Pius Dipheko, Manuel Sepeda, Alex Moon, and Yoni Vargas.
N'dou never won a major world title, but he did win many regional and minor titles at featherweight and super featherweight.
N'dou's trainer and manager were Nick Durant, and he was nicknamed "The Time Bomb" due to his ferocious punching power. According to Wikipedia, he won his first 30 of 32 fights by knockout or stoppage, and currently boasts an 81% knockout ratio.
N'dou had a long and memorable career, fighting for over 18 years. However, near the end of his career, a brain scan revealed an abnormality that could have endangered his health had he continued to box. He eventually returned to the sport, striking up a comeback in February 2009, which he won by technical knockout in the fifth round against Rachid Drilzane. He then fought two more fights, winning one and losing one, before retiring with a record of 37-5, which included 34 knockout wins and three losses via knockout, in February 2016.
Phillip N'dou's career will long be remembered for his punching power, record of knockouts, and his notable fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. Even though he never won a major world title, he won many regional and minor titles throughout his career, marking him as one of South Africa's most successful and notable boxers.
