Despite the loss, Benvenuti bounced back and went on to become a three-time undisputed world champion at super-welterweight and middleweight. He won his first world title fight against Sandro Mazzinghi in June 1965, defeating him via 6th round KO to become the super-welterweight champion of the world.
The highlight of Benvenuti's career was his two fights against Emile Griffith in 1967 and 1968, where he won both via 15 round unanimous decision to become the undisputed middleweight champion, holding the WBA, WBC, and The Ring middleweight world-champion belts.
Benvenuti's final professional fight was for the middleweight undisputed championship title against Carlos Monzón in May 1971, where he lost the fight via 3rd round TKO, ending his career with a record of 82-7-1.
Throughout his career, Benvenuti fought many notable opponents, including two Hall of Famers, Luis Manuel Rodríguez and Emile Griffith, Tom Bethea, Sandro Mazzinghi, Doyle Baird, Jimmy Ramos, and Yoshiaki Akasaka.
